In Memory Of Whitney Lane It is with deep sadness that we advise of the passing of Whitney Lane. Whitney joined Briars Hockey Club in 2002 at the age of 9. She played juniors for several years and soon joined the ranks of the senior women where she continued to flourish. An active member of the Briars Club, Whitney was always around Cintra or Briars activities including helping out with umpiring, social events and coaching on many occasions. This culminated in her agreeing to help Ratty coach 3rd grade men during their pre-season this year. Whitney’s family could always be found on the sidelines at Briars Hockey matches, helping to cheer the girls on to numerous wins. For the last 8 years, Whitney has suffered from PNH, Paroxysmal Nocturnal Haemoglobinuria, a very rare and debilitating disease of the bone marrow that affects the blood and major organs. Earlier this year, Whitney and her family were offered a life saving opportunity via a bone marrow transplant. She went into hospital with all the courage and determination she always displayed on the hockey field and fought everything that came her way as best she could. Sadly, a barrage of infections took their toll and Whitney was unable to beat them. Whilst everyone might not have known Whitney personally, you certainly would have known her bright bubbly smile and wonderful personality that she was renowned for. She was a beautiful person and a wonderful, talented hockey player having been involved in several premiership winning teams and taking out the highest goal scorer award on a number of occasions. As a mark of respect for Whitney, we are asking all Briars Hockey players to wear a black arm band during their game this upcoming weekend as well as observing a minutes silence before commencing play. Whitney will be farewelled at a funeral service to be held on Thursday at 1:15pm at Macquarie Park Crematorium. This will be followed by a gathering of family and friends at Briars at Greenlees Club. Pre-season is the time to think about replacing your hockey shoes. There are a few key characteristics to look for when trying on hockey boots. 1) Your hockey boots should provide support and stability without being too stiff. To assess a shoes stability; it should bend at the forefoot area without too much force, it should resist a twisting / wringing torsion and resist bending in the middle. 2) The outsole (grip) needs to provide appropriate traction on the water based turf to reduce the risk of slips and acute injuries. Running shoes do not provide enough traction or lateral stability, however "trail" running shoe i.e. Brooks Cascadia do have a suitable outsole and offer a water resistant upper, as do hockey boots i.e. Asics Neo and Asics Platinum. 3) Your shoes should fit appropriately in width and length to avoid repetitive trauma to the toenails as well as skin irritation such as blisters and corns. Take your hockey socks and any orthotic device with you when trying on shoes. If you have recurring lower limb injuries whilst playing / training, your footwear and biomechanics may be contributing to the problem. Pre-season is a good time to have your injuries assessed and a treatment plan implemented. Article: 6 Reasons to Start Running Need some inspiration to hit the pavement?
