Dear Old Members,

Apologise for the late notice however we have been able to secure a 5th grade fixture against Colleagues to open what is shaping as a huge Return to Rothwell Day.

The game is exclusive for Old Members currently not playing with the club and is open to all ages, shapes and sizes. The shapes are pretty predicable. There will be unlimited interchange so if you only want a couple of minutes please come down with your boot.  If your body is no longer up to the challenge please still come down and support the guys. There will be a prize for the oldest player to take the field.

Kickoff is 10am 19 June 2010 please be there be 9.30am for a beer and warm up. Gracey is our organising old boy so if you have any questions please give him a call on 0401 834 553. What better way to start the day then beating the old foe!

Cheers,

Briars Rugby

Long Weekend Games

Saturday 12 June at home v Uni New South Wales
Sunday 13 June at Boronia Park v Hunters Hill

Dear Members, Please be advised that the Briars Rugby fixture for 29 May 2010 against Uni of NSW has been cancelled due to ground closures.  Please join the players at the club tomorrow from 12.30pm for some beers and lunch. Regards,Ashley WalshChairman Briars Rugby

Dear Members,

Unfortunately due to the weather, a decision had been made to postpone Old Boys Day until 19 June 2010. While there is a small possibility that Briars will play this week, all indications from council are that Rothwell Park will be closed.
We would still like to welcome all members to come to the club for lunch and a few drinks to see the new sporting room, anytime after 12.30pm would be suitable. Further rugby related activities will be organised.
We apologise for any inconvenience that this postponement has caused however in current times rugby has become a dry weather sport. We will continue to update members on the status of the field for those who still wish to attend.
I would also like to remind everyone that the Annual Dinner with guest speakers Doug Walters and Phil Hughes is on the 10th of July at the Concord Function Centre. Tickets are available by clicking here.  Please help us bring this great event back to its former glory.
Should anyone have any questions or require any further updates please do not hesitate to contact me on 0417 493 419.

Regards,

Ashley Walsh

Chairman, Briars Rugby

Dear Past and Present Briars,

Due to the weather there is a possibility that the games for this weekends Old Boys Day against the University of NSW may either be cancelled or transferred to another ground.

We are currently in discussion with council and hope the weather breaks so we can go ahead with what is shaping to be a great day.

If the games are cancelled we would still like to invite all members to the club to see the new sporting room and partake in some indoor rugby related activities.

Please continue to monitor your email and both www.briarsatgreenlees.com.au and www.briars.rugby.net.au for further information.

An email will be sent Friday with a further update. Looking forward to seeing you this Saturday.

Regards,

Ashley WalshChairman Briars Rugby

Cowra 10’s Tournament 2010

Briars Rugby’s first bus trip and tour for the year began early on Saturday morning as players, coaching staff and loyal supporters headed towards Cowra for the annual 10’s tournament. Our late arrival forcing a reshuffle of the draw allowed the players to watch a few games, and a chance to talk tactics. This worked in Briars favour as we came out victorious in our opening two games against the ‘Ultimate Moose Rugby Club’ and one of the two Hills sides. Stars of the games included Peter Lowe, Jeremy Lawler and the elusive Ben Forbes. The games played at a cracking pace allowed Briars to take advantage of some good offloads, simple draw and pass skills and some good one on one attack. Looking at everyone at the completion of our first two games means there’s a lot more work to do with Dave the trainer during the weeks ahead! An awkward delay of around one hour between our first two games and our remaining pool game meant we went out under prepared and were outclassed for the first 12 minutes of the 13 minute match. Our standings after the pool games meant we played in a semi final knockout against a combined uni team from Canberra in which we started strongly taking a 2 try to nil lead at half time. Ultimately, after controlling most of the possession in the first half, a lack of possession and ball control meant the combined unis team ran away in to victory in the second half. Mentions must be made to the coaches who did their best to organise the players, and to Deano for getting another win on his Briars coaching record! Mentions also go out to players who played out of position in Huddo playing in the second row, Boyter playing as the tallest prop, and Boagy who has become another step closer to the front row by playing up front and saying “I actually didn’t mind it”.

With rugby out of the way, the social festivities were ready to begin. The flannelette shirt kangaroo court session was typical of a Briars Rugby tour, with an introduction to the club to the tour virgins, all 6 of them, a thanks to Walshy, our bus driver Shane Boag and proof that you can’t teach experience with the oldest member versus youngest member.

Without divulging too much information on any of the antics, the remainder of the tour involved handball, a pyjama party, country weddings, a Coles truck, a tipped over milk truck, card games, and a lengthy game of euchre. A big thanks goes out to Coach Guddo and Coach Deano for rallying the troops, all the players for participating and representing the club, loyal supporters who travelled with us, Shane Boag for driving us, and to Ashley Walsh for making it happen. All I can say is that a fun time was had by all, and the antics and rugby should be encouraging enough for more people to join in next year, especially if you are younger than 21!
