PLAY JUNIOR HOCKEY WITH THE BRIARS!!

                                                       Competitionshok

Briars juniors enter competitions for the age groups U/11, U/13, U/15 and U/17. All age groups other than U/17 are mixed competitions for both boys and girls. With Briars entering 2 teams in each age group, beginners can start at any age from 5 to 17.

Competition games are generally Saturday mornings, although some age groups have some games scheduled on Friday evenings.

The competitions commence in March and are completed in September. Easter,

long weekends and school holidays are generally left hockey free.

U/9’s - the Minkies Program

Kids from as young as 5 are invited to participate in our Minkies program. This consists of non-competitive fun games to introduce children to the sport. This is run on Wednesdays at 4:30 pm at Cintra Park. New registrations are accepted throughout the hockey season.

Match Venues

Almost all matches are played on international standard synthetic turf.

The majority of games are played at Briars home ground, Cintra Park, located in Queens Road Five Dock (next to the Concord rugby oval).

For U/11 to U/15 Briars participates in the Sydney North Area Hockey Association competition. This means that games are played in venues located in Pennant Hills, Ryde and Mt. Ku-ring-gai.

Some U/17’s may play in a Sydney wide competition, which will therefore include venues from Sydney’s south.

Coaching

Quality coaching is the all important ingredient in children getting the most out of their hockey experience. Competition success at the junior level is secondary to the children’s enjoyment. Good coaching means that each player can reach their potential. For some children this can simply mean that they are able to make a positive contribution to a team, for others it can mean progressing to the elite level.

In 2006 Briars have revolutionised their approach to coaching, with the appointment of Ivan Boultan as head coach of the club. Ivan Boultan is an internationally recognised coach who will work both with individual players, and also working with the coaches for the individual teams.

Equipment

Girls and boys can turn up to training in normal athletic clothing. A mouthguard and shinpads must be worn. All equipment can be purchased from the clubhouse at Cintra Park. Hockey stick prices start at $20.

A beginners kit consisting of a bag, stick, shinpads, mouthguard and ball is sold at the clubhouse for $32.

For children playing in competition, you will need to purchase socks and shorts. Shirts are issued each year and returned at the end of the season.

For purchase of equipment the contact person is Allan Jones, who runs the sports store at Cintra.

2010 North Area U'9 Competition

This year North Area Hockey have introduced a monthly U'9 competition, and Briars were proud to host the first round at Cintra last Saturday. 9 teams from Briars, Baulkham Hills, Sydney Uni, Northern Districts, Kings Langley and Ryde took to the field in what was for many their first real hockey game!

The atmosphere at Cintra was electric with over 80 budding hockey stars, aged 4 to 9 enjoying friendly competition, and a chance to show their skill whilst being cheered on by a 100 strong crowd.

At the end of the round games it was Briars Gold that finished on top to make it straight into the grand final, and after some very close semi-finals Baulkham hills secured their spot in the final game.

The grand final capped off a fantastic day, both teams produced some great hockey, whilst displaying perseverance and sportsmanship. Congratulations to Briars Gold who were the winners on the day!

These players are the future of hockey, and we would like to thank our Briars; AJ, Wal, Blake, Lewis, Monique, Chief and Lachy Boa, who gave up their time and helped to make the day such a great success!
