Rd 1 Vs Collaroy Plateau

It was with deep sadness that we kicked off the new season knowing that our good friend Richo would not be there to walk onto the field with us one more time – his passion for the game and his strength of character will be greatly missed. Our first game against newcomers Collaroy Plateau started on a good note with the winning of the toss by new skipper Aldo – why have previous captains found this simple task so difficult? With the forecast set for afternoon storms we decided to bowl on a wicket with very little bounce.  Solid batting by Collaroy saw them take the score to 1 for 103 at drinks and at that stage it looked like we would be in for a big run chase.  Some all-round tight bowling in the second half of the innings managed to reasonably contain the Collaroy middle order – final score 6 for 198.  Wicket honours went to Jeff Matchett (3-34), Brian Kirk (2-29) and Aldo Cantori (1-44). Our openers Terry Kershaw (10) and Warwick Giblin (17) found scoring tough against a bowling attack that never wavered from a good length.  The departure of the opening bowlers saw the run rate pick up but despite an excellent knock of 42 retired by Greg Matchett, we were always facing an uphill battle to achieve the required run rate.  A number of our batsmen got off to a good start, notably Steve Lucas (20), David Abood (16) and Jeff Matchett (14) - hopefully they will take this form into the next round.  Final score Collaroy 6 for 198 defeated Burwood 8 for 150.   Round 2

Our next match is at home against Lane Cove White on 25 October.  At this stage everyone who played in the first round has indicated they are available with the exception of Paul Alice, Dave Abood and Brian Kirk (tba).
