Bowls Inter-Zone Carnival

On Friday 11th to Sunday 13th September, Greenlees co-hosted the 2009 Inter-Zone Sides Championships along with Wests Leagues Bowling Club, who co hosted the round robin section of the tournament on the Friday & Saturday, with Greenlees hosting the Semi Finals and Final on the Sunday.

The concept of the tournament is the best 16 players are picked to represent each of their 16 zones in the state. (Greenlees had 3 players; Mark Golby, Mark Gorlicki & Tony Monda represent Zone 11).  The 16 zones are then broken into 4 sections of 4 zones, who play off in a round robin format, with the section winners going on to the semi finals, and the semi final winners meeting in the final.

The weather was perfect all weekend and the greens ran magnificently, with many of the bowlers who are the best in the state going out of their way to comment on the excellence of the greens.

Our zone (Zone 11) played their sectional games at Wests and were good enough to win the section which saw them come to Greenlees on the Sunday to contest the Semi Final where they came up against a very hot Zone 9 side (Sydney’s northern suburbs and beaches), who were a bit too good on the day.  The other Semi Final saw Zone 12 (Sydney South Western Metropolitan) defeat defending champions Zone 16 (Illawarra), with Zone 12 going on to win the Final.

Zone 11 was the last zone in the state to hold this event mainly because there was a conception that there was no club in the zone capable of hosting the event in a manner befitting its high profile, but thankfully Greenlees has laid that conception to bed, with all state officials having nothing but praise for the manner in which the event was hosted.

I must give special thanks to the people who assisted in making the event a success.

Firstly President Don Coleman, Glen and Melissa in the office, Rose in the kitchen, the boys who worked tirelessly on the BBQ; Wayne Comber, Richard Lackey, Bill Goulding on Friday.  Wayne Comber, Mick Laws, Robert Goldberg, Graham Williams, Bill Goulding, John Sneddon and Dick Arnold on the Saturday and Sunday plus Paul Homann and any I have not mentioned who assisted with other tasks. Also to the bar staff  and the rugby boys for toning down their Silly Sunday.  All these things went a long way toward making the tournament the success it turned out to be.

WOMENS BOWLING CLUB UPDATE 2009

The Greenlees Park Women's Bowling Club would like to welcome our newest member and wish her all the best in her bowls. Patricia is not just an ordinary bowler, she is a Blind Bowler.

Patricia lost her sight in 1960 with Retintis Pigmentosa, a genetic disease of the Retina. However Patricia has been bowling for quite some time, representing not only the State of NSW but Australia.  In 1996 she represented Australia in New Zealand, and at Garvin in Scotland in 2001. In May this year Patricia has been picked to represent NSW and is going to Perth for the Vision Impaired and Blind Tournament.

Her many achievements over the years have been to win over 5 Gold, 11 Silver and 2 Bronze medals as well as an Australia Day Medallion Sports Award presented by Concord Council in 2000.

Patricia requires a Director to guide her in the delivery of her bowls.  It is not an easy task, as Greenlees Ladies found out when Mrs Doris Hession from Gransviews Women's Bowling Club came to direct Patricia as well as provide tuition for some of our Ladies.

Another new member who has shown a very keen interest in the game of Bowls is Liam O'Brian who is only 10 years of age.

We are looking for working girls and juniors to join our club, and we can accommoodate competitions to be played on Sundays.

Sixty members and guests helped celebrate our 50th Birthday on 22nd June 2007. State President Mrs. Tricia Part and Mrs. Barbara Hazeltime, Journal Committee, Yaralla District President, Mrs. Narelle Roots and Vice-President, Mrs. May Davis, attended.

Representative from Briars at Greenlees Limited and the Men's Bowling Club were in attendance, also our Patron, Mrs. Doss Lothian.

On rather an inclement day the Bowlers took to the green for a short time until rain commenced. Drinks were then served with savouries.

We then retired to lunch with was delightful, after which speeches were made and trophies presented. President Tricia and President Narelle assisted President Marj cut the cake. President Marj thanked members and guests for attending, and we all agreed it was a great day. We are so proud to have celebrated 50 years. The gold "50" decorations made the room so lovely.

As this was President Marj's final President's Day, we feel it was a fitting end to such a well-loved President's term.
