Foundation News Hockey Scoreboard - June 2011![]() After a couple of false starts the new Hockey electronic scoreboard was officially opened on the weekend at the annual derby day clash with Glebe. The Hockey committee decided to honour one of the sports greatest servants-John Price-by naming it the John Price Scoreboard. The Briars Foundation donated over $12,000 towards this project (scoreboard and security shutter) and the complex at Cintra is now one of the top rated facilities in Sydney Hockey. Paul Price & John Price 11th April 2011 Dear Foundation Member, Just a quick update on the Briars Foundation. Recent projects have included the Hockey scoreboard and a $5000 donation towards the scanning of important historical Briars sporting records. The Foundation is working on the most important and significant project we have ever been involved in - the potential upgrade of the Rothwell Park changerooms. We are currently working with Council on the design and structure and we will have more to report in coming months. Our desire is to also secure naming rights (Ted Stockdale Pavilion) for the change rooms. Rothwell Park is one of the top cricket and rugby grounds in Shires and Sub Districts however the outdated/poor facilities do not befit such a great sporting ground. It's time to have a ground/facility that we can all be proud of,one that could be a showpiece for the respective sports. Once the project design and structure has been finalised and the Briars agree to partner Council in the project, we will commence fundraising, and that's when we'll need your help. The planned start date for building if it proceeds at this stage is July 2012. So, that's just a quick update. It is looking very promising but it is quite a lengthy process and I will update you as soon as we have more to report. Thanks,
Paul Price

The Briars Foundation are about to embark I am very pleased to announce that we are currently working with the City of Canada Bay Council to upgrade The Rothwell Park Changerooms. On the basis that The Briars Foundation shares the cost of this project council is working with us to finalise design plans. These plans will include completely refurbished state of the art changerooms and canteen. So, Briars at Greenlees Rugby and Cricket will finally have a facility to be proud of befitting the home of Briars. We see this as an opportunity to pay tribute to the contribution made to the Briars by Ted Stockdale who made Rothwell Park his "Saturday home" and it is our intention to work with Canada Bay Council to attempt to incorporate into the Pavilion a suitable permanent memorial to Ted. In fact we are trying to negotiate approval with council to name it THE TED STOCKDALE PAVILION!! The planned start date is July next year. The purpose of this email is to update you on this extremely exciting announcement, the next step will be in the new year when the Foundation commence the fund raising required to ensure this happens. The Foundation have completed some exciting projects over the past couple of years - Hockey Scoreboard ($15,000), Memorabilia cabinet at the club ($23,000), Donation for scanning of club records/documents ($5,000), Rugby Scrummaging ($8,000) but this is our biggest and most exciting ever. Have a wonderful Christmas and we look forward to catching up with all of you as we move into full swing early in the new year. Thanks,
Paul Price
The objects of The Briars Foundation are to:
Now in it's 89th year we have more sporting members actively playing sport than at any other time in our history. Today, as Briars at Greenlees we have over 1700 members with over 400 of those representing the club in rugby, cricket, men's and women's hockey, men's and women's bowls, squash and netball.
In addition we have a strong junior development programme with teams in junior cricket and hockey competitions, and a development programme in rugby for young boys from Concord and surrounding suburbs. Our largest project to date has been the construction of the international standard hockey field at Cintra, Concord. This was made possible by the Foundation's ability to provide capital funds of $100,000. This independent source of funds would have been beyond the budget and financial capacity of The Briars Club or of its hockey members. The superb standard of this facility is one of the major reasons why the club has attracted players of international standard, and why Briars Hockey has risen to the highest level in the state, and why it is the fastest growing sport in the club. The playing surface was refurbished in December 2006 again with the Foundation's support.
Having been asked by the Australian Rugby Union to establish a junior development programme in 2005, the Rugby Committee applied to The Foundation for financial assistance to purchase the necessary equipment. The Foundation provided $10,000 which otherwise would have been a considerable burden on Rugby's resources. The Foundation has also recently funded an upgrade of the cricket practice wickets adjacent to Concord High School, and provided some $60,000 to erect night lighting for rugby training at Greenlees Park.
